“Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open?” — Rumi
A life purpose message doesn’t always arrive as inspiration. Sometimes it arrives as a wake-up call: you’ve been living inside a role.
The prison isn’t your life. It’s the way you keep shrinking your life to stay accepted, needed, or “good.”
For purpose-driven people, the most common prison is: being useful instead of being true.
How the prison shows up:
- You say yes automatically, then feel resentful later.
- You keep choosing what’s “safe,” then feel empty.
- You keep supporting other people’s dreams while postponing yours.
- You keep waiting for permission to begin.
- You keep overexplaining your choices so nobody judges you.
Rumi’s question is simple: why are you still inside something you’ve outgrown?
Because the door is open. The door is usually one decision you’ve been avoiding:
- stop doing the thing that drains you
- start the thing you keep postponing
- say no to the role you never agreed to
- choose yourself without a long defense speech
Why we stay inside even when the door is open:
Because leaving the prison changes your identity. It changes how people relate to you. It changes what you can no longer blame on circumstances.
Freedom is beautiful, but it’s also responsible.
And that’s why it’s powerful.
Do this today: The Open Door Sentence
Purpose doesn’t require a dramatic escape plan. It often begins with one clean sentence.
Choose one:
- “I’m not available for that anymore.”
- “I’m choosing what’s true for me.”
- “I need time to focus on my path.”
- “I can’t keep doing this at my own expense.”
- “I’m allowed to begin even if it’s messy.”
Then back it up with one action:
- block 30 minutes for your calling
- decline one obligation
- stop over-functioning in one relationship
- take one first step you’ve delayed
The sign you’ll see today:
You’ll feel fear and relief together. Fear because you’re leaving the familiar. Relief because you’re finally telling the truth.
And your energy will return.
Purpose is not found inside cages—no matter how familiar they are.
Purpose is found when you choose the open door.
